Countdown to FCC VoIP Ruling; Countdown to Star Wars

Leonardo Faoro - The VoIP Weblog

Well, we’re just 3 days away from hearing what the FCC thinks about the E911 situation with VoIP. Despite the nascent efforts of Vonage, Packet8, and others to provide 911 call-routing, it appears the FCC is going to force incumbent local exchange carriers like SBC and Verizon to carry the 911 routing load of competing VoIP providers.
One of fellow blogger Jeff Pulver’s buddies thinks the whole thing is a federal government conspiracy designed by beltway politicians to crush innovation in telecom before too much can change. We’ll see on Thursday, when the FCC makes their position known. I’m hoping they take a cue from Canada and avoid a heavy-handed approach. If not, we’ll still get something good on Thursday—the new Star Wars movie.
